For an all-day hiking shirt, we recommend a short-sleeved T-shirt or a lightweight long-sleeved undershirt made from synthetic fabric or merino wool. Hiking shirts with collared buttons offer a high level of ventilation and sun protection on hot days, while traditional t-shirts are less restrictive and easier to wear over multiple layers. Choose fabrics like polyester and wool over cotton as they wick away sweat, dry quickly and stay warm even when wet. The Smartwool Merino 150 Baselayer Top is a temperature-regulating merino shirt that is available in both short sleeve and long

sleeve variants.

We can’t stress enough how important it is to bring a sufficient amount of water along the trail. Two liters is about the minimum we’d recommend for a full-day hike, and in hot and dry climates, it’s not unusual to bring up to four liters. BPA-free Nalgene bottles are our favorite way to transport water backcountry, and they’re much cheaper and lighter than popular insulated designs. However, if you prefer to drink on the go, a water bladder with hydration tube is an

essential piece of equipment.

We particularly love MSR’s 2-liter DromLite with hydration set for its versatility and durability. And if water is available along the way and you prefer to filter throughout the day, it’s a good idea to also bring a water filter or purification tablets (see below). Your day hiking backpack should be a backpack, not a messenger bag, not a messenger bag. A backpack ensures that your hands are free and that the weight of your most important things is evenly distributed when hiking

LONG UNDERWEAR — If you’re hiking in cold weather, bring a pair of long underwear to provide extra insulation for your legs. In terms of body size, most hikers prefer crew-neck socks to protect against low branches and dirt, but quarter-height models and no-show designs have a lower profile and go well with sneakers and trail runners. FACE WEAR — Constant weather conditions such as wind, dust, rain, snow and sun can damage your face. Therefore, bring appropriate protection for your hike the next day. Part of the appeal of a day hike is certainly the opportunity to switch off and leave the pings and notifications of daily life behind

FIRST AID KIT — Prepare for large and small injuries and pack basic first aid kit for your hike the next day. It can be overwhelming, especially if you’re a beginner hiker, to know exactly what to pack for hiking. WINTER JACKET — A packable, lightweight winter jacket is a must for day hikes where temperatures can be below freezing point. MAP — Although many hiking trails are very easy to follow, always bring a detailed printed map for less established backcountry day hikes

No one ever intends to get into an emergency situation on a day hike, but it’s important to be prepared for the worst case scenario. Study your hike thoroughly, check the weather forecast, and use the following 52-point checklist to put together all the essential equipment you’ll need before your upcoming day hike. Luckily I’ve always escaped without a scratch, but my failure to prepare could have sent me to hospital, put other hikers in danger, or worse.
